Family eat you out of house and home this past holiday weekend? It’s time to stock up on your produce; head to the East Lynn Farmers’ Market today from 3 to 7pm. Just about everything has been harvested, so now is the prime time to stock up on squash, apples, pears, and all the other Fall fruits and vegetables that are symbolic of this time of the year. In addition, this is the last month you’ll be able to get fresh, locally-grown beans, broccoli, celery, corn, cucumber, eggplant, grapes, lettuce, onions, peppers, plums and tomatoes, so the time to shop is now!

282. Leslieville Farmers’ Market

Leslieville may be known for its fantastic vintage shops and its abundance of independent cafes, but its Farmers’ Market is somewhat of a gem, hidden away in Jonathan Ashbridge Park each Sunday from early June until late October. The Leslieville Farmers’ Market strives to help their neighbours buy their food “directly from its source (and get to know them by name)! By supporting the building of relationships between the community and local environmentally responsible producers, the Market will not only help you to reduce your carbon footprint – it will help you discover great tasting food grown within miles of where you live.

270. Sick Kids Hospital Farmers’ Market

If you work on or near University Ave and Dundas Street/College Street, the Sick Kids Hospital’s Farmers’ Market is your opportunity to purchase fresh produce on your morning break or at lunch! Starting at 9am and continuing until 2pm, today is the ideal day to check out the wares of local farmers – almost everything is in season in September! You’ll find freshly-picked apples, beans, blueberries, broccoli, carrots, cucumber, eggplant, nectarines, peppers, plums, radishes, squash and tomatoes around at this time of year, so if you are at all into preserving your own food while the harvest is at its finest (the cheapest, most eco-friendly and delicious way to get through the winter with an abundance of fruits and veggies), you need to get yourself to a farmers’ market, stat!

256. Stonegate Farmers’ Market

Each Tuesday from June until October, the Stonegate Farmers’ Market features locally made honey, cheese, meat, breads, sweets, and of course, locally grown fruits and veggies! Created as a venue where the Stonegate community can gather, the market is complete with entertainers, special events and children’s activities, so bring your friends and family along while you do your weekly shop!

The Stonegate Farmers’ Market starts at 4pm and continues until 7pm in the parking lot of Christ Church St. James’ Anglican church (194 Park Lawn Road).

167. Hands on cooking class: Double Duty – The Whole Chicken

What’s the best way to eat gourmet meals while sticking to a grocery budget? By using one ingredient in multiple different ways! In this “hands on cooking class,” Chef Geraldine Cutajar will teach you how you can use a chicken to make multiple different meals. Learn how to make a perfectly roasted chicken, which can then be used to make chicken stock and a delicious roasted chicken salad!

130. Trinity Bellwoods Farmers’ Market

The promise of summer is officially in the air with the first Trinity Bellwoods Farmers’ Market of 2011, today! Located in the northwest section of Trinity Bellwoods Park at Shaw and Dundas West, this farmers’ market features a great selection of local fruits and veggies, fish and honey, seedlings and bread, coffee and artisan cheeses, and much more!

We all know that it has been an especially cold spring this year, so don’t come expecting peaches and raspberries (they will come eventually!), but there will still be plenty of wares to purchase, farmers to meet, and community to enjoy.
