298. Hands-on cooking class: The Making of a Cook Series: Learn the Basics of French Cuisine

Always dreamed of whipping up a feast a la Julia Child? Inspired by the hit film Julie & Julia? Learn “the art of French cooking” starting today as the “Making of A Cook Series: Learn the Basics of French Cuisine” begins at the St. Lawrence Market!

Featuring a series of four classes over the next four weeks, you’ll learn how to make a serious salad, work with meat and fish, and perfect your pastry. Tonight, Chef Pamela McDonald introduces you to the world of French sauces. Learn the making of world class French sauces and become a “saucier”  tonight from 6:30pm until 9:30pm.

Each class of the French Cuisine series is $85/per person (making the entire series $340). All classes are on Tuesday evenings, with the final class on November 15, 2011. To register for one or all of the classes, email kitchen@stlawrencemarket.com or call 416-860-0727.

You’ve heard of the locavore movement, vegetarianism and the vegan lifestyle, but have you discovered “raw” food? Raw foodism or “rawism” focuses on consuming uncooked and unprocessed food. Sound intriguing? Chef Claudia Gaviria of Cruda Cafe will take this hands-on cooking class to a new level as she introduces class participants to recipes using green, organic and locally grown vegan “raw food.”

237. BuskerFest

Now in its 11th year of wacky and wonderful fun, the Scotiabank Toronto International BuskerFest starts today! Hosting hundreds of fantastic street performers from across the globe, BuskerFest fills the St. Lawrence Market neighbourhood with daredevils and magicians, circus acts, contortionists, clowns, acrobats, aerialists, musicians and more!

New this year is the “Magic Corner,” a stage completely dedicated to magic; the Fionn MacCool’s Beer Garden; and a celebration of Morocco in the “Sultan’s Tent” in Berczy Park. Three benefit shows in support of Epilepsy Toronto will include a performance by Montreal’s Cirque Éloize as well as two group gala shows, featuring a collection of the BuskerFest performers. Scotiabank will match each dollar donated by the audience at “The Fire Show” on August 27th at 9:30pm, which will feature the “hottest” of BuskerFest’s fire acts.

187. Canadian Central Regional Barista Competition & Coffee Fair

Love coffee? You’re invited to attend the Canadian Central Regional Barista Competition & Coffee Expo at St. Lawrence Market! You’ll have the opportunity to sample coffee and tea from local coffee roasters, experience coffee cupping and latte art demonstrations, and watch baristas compete for the title of Central Regional Barista Champion!

Competitors will prepare and serve 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos and 4 “signature” drinks of their own creation in a short fifteen minutes. Baristas will be judged on station cleanliness, beverage presentation, taste, technical skills and overall impression. The winner will go on to compete in the Canadian National Barista Championship in Vancouver in October; the Canadian champion will go on to represent Canada at the 2012 World Barista Championship!

This event is open to the public by suggested donation to “Coffeekids,” a registered charity which helps families in coffee-growing countries build better lives. The event starts at 10am and continues until 6pm in the North Market.

 

186. Interactive Demonstration: Summer Grillin’ Host the Perfect Backyard BBQ

Ever dreamed of hosting the “perfect backyard BBQ,” hailed by friends and neighbours as the “event of the summer?” Now’s your chance to make that dream a reality! St. Lawrence Market has several fantastic butchers, and Chef Geraldine Cutajar will introduce you to a variety of meats that make for great grilling! You’ll be treated to a grilling demo, while a guest event coordinator will teach you the “do’s and don’ts” of hosting that perfect outdoor party, complete with entertaining and budget tips. The menu will consist of appetizers, a main item, and dessert – all right from the grill!
